On this day in 1938, British prime minister Neville Chamberlain returns from a meeting with Hitler in Munich and promises “peace for our time.” In less than a year, the world will be at war. Today’s Roll includes Barrie Combe of Donaghcloney, the first North Irish Horse officer killed in WW1. Irish Guardsmen, John Burke from Lurgan and Bryce Gilmour from Cookstown fell at Loos. In 1918 Robert Magill son of the local postman in Killyleagh died. A Royal Navy stoker, he was one of three brothers who served in the war. His brother James Magill gave up his post in Eaton’s store, Toronto and served with Canadian artillery. James Rentoul a Queen’s graduate died serving in a Field Ambulance. He is one of seven RAMC privates whose remains were interred at La Baraque British Cemetery, Bellenglise, Aisne, France. RAFVR Sergeant Cecil McMullan, a TCD graduate and former member of 502 (Ulster) Squadron died in 1941. He is remembered at the Runnymeade Memorial, Surrey, and 502 (Ulster) Squadron WM, in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast.
