An account of the remarkable service in war and peace of Rifleman Stanley Burrows. He saw service in the Belfast Blitz, the Normandy invasion with the attack on Cambes Wood. 15 names in the Roll for 1918 reflect the intensity of the last major campaign by Germany. Six Royal Navy men were lost this day in 1942. Three NI men posted to HMS Tamar, the RN’s land base in Singapore, died due to the Japanese invasion in 1942. Gerald Atwell from Tandragee, Hans Calvert from Comber and John Crangle from Belfast are named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Panel 64. Calvert was in the SS Lisbon Maru which left Hong Kong for Shanghai with 1816 prisoners on board. She was torpedoed by a USS Submarine. Petty Officer James Jamfrey from Cookstown and Groomsport and Cook William Houston from Belfast were lost in HMS Curacoa. Veteran Thomas Boyd from Portstewart trained at Finner Camp with Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was wounded in 1918. He served in the merchant navy before and after the war. He was living at Mullaghacall Cottages, Portstewart, when he died on 02/10/1957 aged 68 years. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Agherton Parish Church.
