Photo – V Beach cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli. John MacKeown from Whitehead, a Second Lieutenant with the Connaught Rangers, was a former member of Queen’s Officer Training Corps. He died this day in 1917 and is remembered at Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. A year later to the day, William Hay who had been a Demonstrator in Anatomy at QUB fell. A Medical Officer attached to a Royal Field Artillery Brigade, he had served in France and Flanders from 05/10/1915 including the Battle of Theipval 1916, Messines Ridge 1917, and Cambrai Nov 1917. In 1918 William McKnight who had emigrated to New Zealand from Fivemiletown, fell serving with the Canterbury Regiment. He is remembered on Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial Bapaume, Pas-de-Calais, France and Fivemiletown Methodist Church. The veteran remembered today was awarded a Military Cross serving with Royal Irish Rifles. Lieutenant Culbertson Jackson, MC, was born in 1893 and was studying for a science degree at QUB when the Great War started. He enlisted as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. After the war he became a Presbyterian minister, serving in Randalstown and with other congregations. On 05/10/1943, the Irish Brigade embarked on a “peaceful” Italian cruise from Barletta to Termoli where they landed under artillery fire – 61 days later, they would be relieved by Canadian forces at the Moro River.
