John Charles was a medical officer who was Mentioned in Dispatches and was awarded the Military Cross. He died on 06/10/1917 of wounds received during the Third Battle of Ypres. His parents, Professor John James and Mrs. Harrietta Madeline (nee Godfrey) Charles, lived at the Crescent, Portstewart. They were married in the local Agherton Parish Church on 01/07/1873 where their son is named on the parish WM and on a family plaque. Patrick Kane from Armagh died on the same day. He had served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Gallipoli in April 1915. He died of wounds in Flanders. The citation dated March 1918 for his Award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal, is inspirational and is also recorded in Today’s Roll. Frankie McCluskey an Air Gunner from Ballymoney died in 1942 near the town of Rhenen, Netherlands, when his plane was attacked his parachute failed to open. Today’s Roll records how the local community in the town cared for his grave over the years and later with the help of the local RAF Association and RBL branches made contact with his relatives.
