Along the French coast of the English Channel, west of Boulogne, there is a series of large War Grave Cemeteries which were relatively close to the major military hospitals to which the injured were brought from the WW1 front lines. John McIlhatton from Coleraine who died in 1916 is remembered at Etaples Cemetery, France, which is in a large area of sandhills surrounded by forest. He is also named in New Row Congregational Church’s Roll of Honour. Thomas Darragh from Broughshane died at a base hospital near Boulogne and was laid to rest in 1918 in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, where some headstones are laid flat due to the sandy nature of the soil and the wind force. He is named on Cookstown WM. Flight Sergeant William Smith, a former member of 502 (Ulster) Squadron died in 1941 and is remembered at the RAF Runnymeade Memorial, Knockbreda Parish WM and 502 (Ulster) Squadron WM in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast.
