Leslie Porter was a keen car racer and international rally driver from Derry and Holywood who became an RFC pilot in WW1.In 1917 Rev Alex Stuart a minister in Bessbrook became the first Irish Presbyterian chaplain to die in the war. He had previously worked with the YMCA in Egypt. He was one of five brothers to be ordained. On the same day, Hugh Robinson from Downpatrick also died serving with Canadian infantry. In 1918 Nurse Muriel Tichborne, from Tynan, died in Aldershot Military Hospital. She was the daughter of the Rev Ford and Mrs. Elizabeth Tichborne. There is a stained glass window memorial to her in St Mark’s Parish Church, Armagh. Three from NI were lost when HMS Eclipse hit a mine in the Aegean Sea in 1943. Eclipse blew up and sank in only two minutes. In addition to the ship’s complement of around 200 men, she was carrying another 200 soldiers, including a company of the Buffs. Serre Road Cemetery (photo) is the largest war cemetery on the Somme.
