
Today is the anniversary of the rededication of the Queen’s University War Memorial by Field-Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke in 1950 marking the addition of the names of the fallen in World War II to those of the Great War. Among those remembered today is John Allan from Ballycairn, Coleraine who had moved to Port Glasgow and enrolled in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He fell in 1914. Trevor Bennet MC an RIR officer who had taken part in the advance on Theipval died in aerial combat in 1916 with the Royal Flying Corps. On the same day, Creggan born Henry Ewart an Orangeman from Muckamore died after being taken prisoner. Thomas Beggs from Ballyclare and Walter Curry from Aughnacloy died serving with Canadian forces. Thomas is named on Ballyclare WM and Walter on the Dungannon WM. Viscount Stuart from Stewartstown died serving in the Royal Armoured Corps in north Africa in 1942. The Eton and Cambridge educated officer is named on the Alamein Memorial in Alexandria, Stewartstown WM, and Stewartstown C of I RH
