
Cullybackey-born Thomas Cochrane died serving with the Canadian Eastern Ontario Regiment in Belgium in 1915. Twenty-one-year-old Robert Wright, RBAI, QUB OTC, and Royal Irish Rifles officer, was killed in the Third Battle of Gaza, in which General Allenby captured and liberated Jerusalem in 1917. The battalion suffered over 120 casualties with 23 men being killed. John Bell MC returned from Canada to serve with the Royal Field Artillery before transferring to the Royal Air Force. He died in France in 1918 and is remembered on Holywood WM and Helen’s Bay C of I WM. Two of the three RAF fatalities from WW2 in today’s Roll died in accidents in flight training. In 1942 Herbert Adams from Newry was flying solo doing circuits around the airfield at Wheaton Aston.
