On this day in 1918 Sir Edward Carson and Sir James Craig launched a campaign to raise the funds to enable them to build a memorial fitting of the ‘gallant deeds of the Ulster Division.’ This resulted in the Thiepval Memorial Tower, a modified reproduction of Helen’s Tower, Clandeboye. In 1915 Henry Duddy whose roots were in Derry and Coleraine died in Egypt. His son William died on 25/04/1917 in France. Today’s Roll includes two WW2 Fleet Air Arm pilots – Henry Beggs from Irvinestown who took part in the Battle of Britain and Ken Inskip from Knock who had been a member of 502 (Ulster) Sqdn, RAF. Canadian links – Joseph Cunningham a naval surgeon from Portrush served on Atlantic and North Russian convoys He migrated to Canada and was the first person from Canada to single-handedly sail the Atlantic in both directions. Another veteran today is Benjamin Johnston an Old Portoran who served in the Boer War and returned with Canadian forces in WW1 and transferred to the North Irish Horse.
