Serre Road Cemetery No 2. is the largest CWGC cemetery on the Somme with over 7,000 graves there. John Milliken from Ballysally, Coleraine, was born on this day in 1896. He signed on in the Royal Navy in 1913 as a boy and in 1914 as a man. Demobbed in 1920 he immediately signed up for the RN Reserve. Two of our three Veterans today did Boy Service in the Royal Navy in WW1. In 1916 Albert Falloon from Larne died in Greece serving in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. George Grattan an RAF sergeant from Bangor died as a Japanese POW in 1942. His mother and two sisters were killed when German bombs fell on Bangor, Co. Down on 16th April 1941. In 1943 the costly liberation of Italy continued. Belfast men William Coggle of the Royal Ulster Rifles and William Duff of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers are both remembered at the Sangro River War Cemetery. In 1947 the death occurred of Able Seaman Patrick McComb from Ballymena who had been a Japanese prisoner of war. His remains rest in Kilbride New Cemetery, Ballyclare.
