Joseph O’Neill from Magherafelt who fell on this day in 1915 was one of three brothers to die in WW1. In the dining room of the Ulster Reform Club, there is a painting presented by Mr. Bass Capper to the Club in memory of his son Captain Bass Durant Capper, who died in the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. James Emerson of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was awarded a VC for his actions on this day. Albert Whiteside a member of Antrim Masonic Lodge and First Presbyterian Church, is on the list of one of the first Ulster Volunteers to join the 11th RIR. In 1944 Thomas Clark of Upperlands was lost when HMS Bullen was torpedoed. His father Major Thomas Jackson Clark rejoined the Army on the outbreak of war. Herbert McKee RN, a law graduate from QUB, was awarded a George Medal for mine disposal. Two currently serving C of I chaplains recently played a key role in developing a new museum of forces’ chaplaincy which is displaying possessions of the chaplain who first proposed the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
