On this day in 1915 Hugh McAuley from Ballycastle, Patrick Carson from Cookstown, and Charles Doherty from Fivemiletown, died in action in the Balkans. They are remembered on the Doiran Memorial, Doiran, Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1917 the London Irish took part in the liberation of Jerusalem. Four Walker brothers from Keady served in South African Forces. John Walker died on this day in 1917 and is named on the Theipval Memorial. In 1940 Operation Compass, the first large British military operation of the Western Desert Campaign began. 500 Commonwealth servicemen were killed in the two-month campaign – with the remains of over 300 being buried at CWGC’s Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery. Veterans in today’s Roll include Allan Martin from Portstewart who served with Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 10th Btn (the Derrys). Wounded in 1918, he died in 1961, aged 78. Marine Leo McGrilen from Holywood survived serving on HMS Cyclops which was stuck in ice in the White Sea, Russia after WW1. RAF veteran, Sir Patrick Moore, became the astronomer at Armagh Observatory. He died on this day in 2012. Photo – Lurgan War Memorial.
