Billy Telford from Harryville in Ballymena received the British Empire Medal for his bravery in trying to rescue American aircrew from a crashed and blazing plane in Northern India in the dying days of WW2. He brought skills from his pre-war experience to the army. The 10th (S.) Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (Derry Volunteers) introduced their French neighbours to the Burning of Lundy in 1915. Japanese troops force landings on Hong Kong island on December 18, 1941, and slaughter ensues. Today’s veteran Charles McCullough was born on the Shankill Road, Belfast, on this day in 1923. He was a submariner who took part in Arctic convoys. He became a Belfast City Councillor and a member of the Senate (Upper House) of the NI Parliament. He was Vice-President of the Belfast Branch of the RNA at the time of his death in 2014.
