
George McDowell from Lurgan was posthumously awarded the Albert Medal for his actions in saving life following the sinking of HMS Kandahar on this day in 1941. William Carson, a former boy international football player, also died. Khandahar and other ships entered the minefield with HMS Neptune (See yesterday’s Roll). Among those rescued was James Magennis the only native of Northern Ireland to receive the Victoria Cross for service in WW2, for his actions on 31 July 1945.
