December 20. Albert Medal for Lurgan sailor’s costly lifesaving. Roll of Honour

George McDowell from Lurgan was posthumously awarded the Albert Medal for his actions in saving life following the sinking of HMS Kandahar on this day in 1941. William Carson, a former boy international football player, also died. Khandahar and other ships entered the minefield with HMS Neptune (See yesterday’s Roll). Among those rescued was James Magennis the only native of Northern Ireland to receive the Victoria Cross for service in WW2, for his actions on 31 July 1945.  Photo – Regina Trench Cemetery in the snow on the Somme battlefields. Regina Trench was captured by the Canadians and the battle of the Somme came to an end near here in November 1916.
