December 26. Yachtsman from RNIYC and HMS Caroline lost. Roll of Honour

Walter Edmenson, a Naval Reserve officer from HMS Caroline, who was a member of Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, and of a well known Belfast shipping company, was lost when his craft hit a mine on Boxing Day 1940. In 1943 Royal Navy ships sank German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in the Battle of North Cape off Norway. HMS Duke of York took part. Remembered today are men from NI who served in York. They are Andrew Andrews from Killyleagh, Edward Bingham a famous Arctic explorer from Dungannon, and William Jarvis  from  Londonderry. Andrew also survived the loss of HMS Pink on D Day. His moving account is included. Photo – Tyne Cot Cemetery. The Memorial commemorates those whose who died in the Ypres Salient after 16/08/1917 and whose graves are not known. Total 35,001.
