Joseph Dougherty from Newbuildings emigrated to Canada. A Sapper with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he died this day in 1918 in a UK hospital as a result of injuries received in battle in France. Joseph’s body was sent by train to the docks, by ship to Belfast, and from there to Waterside Station, Londonderry. His remains rest at Grange Old Graveyardnear Bready. Before WW2 Bombardier Eric Sheals was a civil engineer with Belfast City Surveyors’ Department. He died this day in 1942. The former RBAI student’s remains rest in Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya, North Africa. John Smyth from Belfast was demobbed this day in 1919 from the Royal Navy.
