Each evening the Last Post is sounded at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. We celebrate 21 years of voluntary service by a team member. Emily Gray from Caledon died on this day in 1919 as a result of her service as as army staff nurse. She is remembered on Nursing Service memorials in York Minster and Belfast Cathedral. Robert MacDonald of Coleraine served with the local Royal Artillery Battery before transferring to the RAF. He died in 1942 in a burning accident. In 1943 Herbert Darragh from Belfast died in HMS Evolution off North Africa. His brother Andrew served as a sergeant in the RAF and two sisters served in the WAA. His father was wounded serving with the Inniskillings in WW1. In 1945 John McDowell from Hillsborough died when his Lancaster bomber was shot down near the Czechoslovakia border. On the same day HMS Caroline reservist, twenty-five year old Abraham Proudfoot from Belfast perished in HM Submarine Porpoise. He had six years of service and was awarded the BEM for bravery and resource when his ship was attacked by enemy aircraft.
