January 21. Sir Norman Stronge. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1981, 86 year old veteran, Captain, The Right Honourable, Sir Norman Stronge, Bt PC MC HML, Military Cross and the Belgian Croix de Guerre, was killed in his home at Tynan by the Provisional IRA. The Roll today commemorates eleven servicemen from NI. Hubert Henderson, a former student of Rockport, serving with the London Irish Rifles, a battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles, was killed during the fighting on Hill 286. His name is recorded on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Tunisia. Thomas Russell from Ballymena serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died in Italy in the aftermath of the Battle of Garigliano in 1944. That night William Gowdy from Larne and Herbert Gracey from Belfast died on a Bomber Command mission over Magdeburg, Germany. Robert Horne from Belfast died on a reconnaissance flight near the Po Valley, Italy in 1945. Eldred Montgomery was born in Kells this day in 1888. After service with Queen’s University OTC he was commissioned in the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1917. He later transferred to the Indian Army. His brother, Verus Calvin Montgomery MB, also fought in the war. Both are remembered on Ballynure Presbyterian Church RH.
