Today is Holocaust Memorial Day – On this day in 1943 Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. By this time, an estimated 2,000,000 persons, including 1,500,000 Jews, have been murdered there. The record of the Inniskilling Fusiliers is again reflected in today’s Roll. Twelve names are recorded from 1917 including Robert Jamison from Upperlands who enlisted in Coleraine, William Johnstone from Fivemiletown, and Michael McBrearty of Fintona, with men from Belfast and Derry. Many more died in the day but the records available do not give their home address. Bellaghy-born Thomas Gilmore died after traveling to UK with New Zealand forces. He died of a combination of influenza and pneumonia in 1919. He is named on Castledawson WM. Patrick Rusk from Drumbeg was killed flying a Spitfire in 1942. Gunner Fred McCarroll from Belfast died in 1944. On the same day, William Adams from Brookeborough and William Wylie of Aughnacloy died with Inniskilling Fusiliers near Naples, Italy.
