
Three infantrymen died this day in 1916 – Henry Magee from Strabane, Herbert McWilliams from Ahoghill, and James Sempey from Ballyclare. Edwin Johnston – Smyth, a chaplain from Glenavy, died in 1917. In 1942 Portstewart-born Gunner James Dunlop died in a Middle East hospital. His wife resided at Long Commons, Coleraine. In 1945 John Anderson from Stewartsown died in the Philippines serving in the US Army. He emigrated to the United States alone when he was 11 years old, following his mother’s death, and settled with his aunt. A veteran’s entry tells how Bob Ferguson from Enniskillen who served as a FAA pilot after WW2 eventually trained as a doctor and served in the Veterans’ hospital in Boston USA. Emerson Herdman of the well-known Herdman’s flax spinning plant at Sion Mills served with the North Irish Horse in WW1. He served in the NI Senate from 1923 – 1949.
