February 27. NI navy men in Battle of Java Sea. Roll of Honour

John McGuckin from Cookstown, Thomas Graham, and William Hagan from Belfast were lost in HMS Jupiter in 1942 in the Battle of the Java Sea. Thomas Burns from Londonderry was in HMS Repulse which was sunk in the same action. He said, “I swam around and eventually got on board a destroyer called the Electra”. Woodrow Douglas, a submariner from Belfast was lost in HM Submarine Tigris in 1943. He and his wife Margaret married in October 1942 and Woodrow rejoined his shipmates three days later. He would never return to Belfast. Royal Ulster Rifleman John Beck from Banbridge died in the advance on Germany in 1945. Two veterans of WW1 are remembered. Charles Emerson from Tandragee served in the RN Air Service and Tyrone man Beattie Lyons served in France from February 1916. Both graduated from QUB in medicine.
