This day in 1915 pub owners in Lurgan stated they would decline to serve soldiers in uniform with liquor in consequence of the closing down by the military authorities of one public-house in the town. In 1942 Flying Officer Hubert Sheals died during the evacuation of Tjilatjap (now Cilacap), Java, Indonesia. He was a member of Malone Golf Club and was a +1 golfer. He represented Ireland and Ulster in tournament play. William Kelly from Cookstown served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in Egypt, Palestine and India. In 1944 he was killed in action in Burma. Doctors from NI formed a significant element of the community’s response in both World Wars. John West from Antrim rose to become Colonel Commandant of the Royal Army Medical Corps. His father served as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. James McCurdy, a young shoemaker from Portrush, who served with the North Irish Horse in WW1 was admitted to hospital due to frostbite in 1917. He recovered and survived until 1942.
