James Braithwaite a Company Serjeant Major from Lisburn and John Carruthers a private with links to Ballycastle who fell in 1916 are listed on the Basra Memorial in Iraq. The CSM may have died on a death march of prisoners of war. In 1917 two Ballymena men, William Blair and George McMullan, fell serving with the Royal Irish Rifles. Ian Munce from Holywood died serving with the RAF in 1945. He is remembered on memorials at QUB, Sullivan Upper School, Methodist College and Holywood. Today’s Veterans include Bill Brown, a WW2 navy flier who later designed the well-known Ruffian sailing boat in Portaferry and Harry Hamilton, a WW1 DCM holder, who was Chairman of the White House, Portrush. US born Teddy Dixon grew up in east Belfast and took part in the liberation of Dachau which he described as ‘going into hell’. Photo – Revd.
