
HMS Lapwing was sunk on a convoy to Murmansk in 1945. Three men from NI were lost. Tommy Jess (photo) from Lisburn survived. Laura Gailey from Londonderry was a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Nurse. She died in1917, from pneumonia. Women’s Orange Lodges in Liverpool and Londonderry marked the centenary of her death. In 1918 William Wilson, son of the Minister of New Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, died in an accident in Paris whilst he was serving as a chaplain with the YMCA. On the same day, Royal Irish Rifleman John McKinley from Downpatrick died of wounds in a German Prison Camp. In 1945 Lieutenant Maurice Young a well – known Bangor sportsman died in Italy serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Today’s Veteran is George Gunning from Enniskillen. He and two brothers served in WW1. One died in service in 1916.
