Admiral John McClintock of Ballycarry retired on this day in 1929, completing 55 years service including four years continuous sea duty during WW1. Two Belfast RN men James Johnston and William McBride died in HMS Laforey in 1917. Today’s Roll includes the names of 24 men who died in the final major German onslaught of 1918. Two were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. James Hughes was a fruit dealer and widower from Portadown. Dungiven-born Robert Hamilton was from the Fountain area of Londonderry. Both already had been awarded the Military Medal. Most of the fallen on this day have no known grave. They are remembered on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. Robert Morrow from Fivemiletown was a Royal Inniskilling Fusilier. He saw service in Palestine, Egypt and India. He went with the Expeditionary Force to France in 1939, served in Norway, and was also in the Dunkirk evacuation. He joined the Commandos on their formation. Commando Robert Morrow died when his boat sank crossing the Rhine in 1945.
