Charles Ervine MC died this day in 1916 serving with the Tyneside Irish battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was a member of Cregagh Cricket Club. The Club has the following on record – “Of the thirty Cregagh cricketers who served in the war eight lost their lives. Between them they were well decorated including two Military Crosses and five Military Medals”. John Donnelly from Movanagher, Kilrea was badly wounded in March 1918 and was taken from the front and transferred by ship to Southampton hospital where he died following the amputation of a leg. He is named on Kilrea War Memorial.
Second Word War entries today reflect the combat in Tunisia and Myanmar. Thomas McCarter from Drumahoe and Neill Murray from Derry died serving with the 9th Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, from Londonderry in Tunisia. Men from the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 1st Btn. are named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar. They include Samuel Dunlop from Banbridge and William Kane, of Coleraine. Another Gunner killed in Tunisia was Daniel Wilson, a former member of the Officer Training Corps at Shrewsbury School. A keen sportsman, he was awarded a Blue for athletics whilst a student at King’s College, Cambridge. He is named on one of two memorial stones in the Grand Hall of the Royal Courts of Justice, Chichester Street, Belfast. Padre Pat Kelleher was awarded an immediate Military Cross for his actions at Casino with the Irish Brigade in 1944. Photo – The Medjez-El-Bab Memorial.
