Robert McConnell, son of a former minister of Megain Memorial Presbyterian Church, Belfast, and a brilliant QUB student, died in Basra in 1916, as did Charles Holdcroft (photo) from Magheragall. Charles Burke from Armagh, a Wing Commander in the Royal Flying Corps, died in France in 1917. Fred Morrison from Limavady died over Norway in 1940. In 1942 six men from NI perished when HMS Hermes, Britain’s first aircraft carrier, on voyage towards the Maldives was sunk by Japanese forces. Hugh Kelly of the Intelligence Corps was from Londonderry and attached to the Derry HAA Artillery Regiment. He died in 1945 and is remembered at Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt, and on a memorial in St Columb’s Cathedral, Derry. Today is the anniversary of the WW1 attack on Vimy Ridge which was especially costly to Canadian forces.
