Eveline Dawson from Ballymena, a Matron, and Hugh McGee from Ballycastle, a Corporal in the Medical Corps, died when the Hospital Ship Salta was sunk in 1917. On the same day John Leyden from Portstewart, William Moffett from Magheragall, and S Wethers from Moira fell. Five RN men from NI died in HMS Hunter in Narvik harbour, Norway, in 1940. HMS Hardy was sunk there later this month. Churchill visited the survivors including Bobby McAtamney from Carrickfergus. Sub Lieutenant John Tillie, a son of the famous shirt-manufacturing family in Londonderry, was awarded a DSC for his action in HMS Hotspur. Woodrow Wilson from Belfast was lost in HM Submarine Tigris in 1943. He had been Mentioned in Despatches. He had married in October 1942. He was 22 and his wife 20. Three days after the wedding he left Belfast to rejoin his ship. Today’s veteran Sandy Saunderson, a WW2 vet, was murdered by Provisional IRA terrorists in the school where he was head teacher. He had retired from the UDR in the previous year.
