The 1917 Battle of Arras is reflected in today’s Roll of Honour. Two Ballymena men, John Agnew serving with Royal Scots Fusiliers, and Robert McClintock with the Royal Irish Fusiliers, are named on the Arras Memorial, France, as their graves are unknown. Royal Irish Fusilier William McAuley, of Randalstown, formerly of the North Irish Horse, died in Belgium in 1918. Six men from NI died serving with the RAF on this date during WW2. They included Samuel Beckett from Bangor and John Law from Glenmanus, Portrush. Their remains rest in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany. James Agnew and William Farquhar, RN men from Belfast, were lost in HMS Beverley in 1943. Today is the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of the Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, Germany, a camp that is judged second only to Auschwitz in the horrors it imposed on its prisoners.
