On this day in 1942 HM Submarine Upholder was lost with all hands off Tripoli. Two submariners from Northern Ireland served in Upholder during the war. They were Lieutenant Henry Walmisley of Kilkeel and the legendary Admiral Arthur Hezlett (photo) from Aghadowey. Today is the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. In 1918 Royal Irish Riflemen Thomas Graham from Dunmurry, John Hamilton from Aghadowey, and Robert Dermott from Banbridge died in Belgium. In WW2 Afrika Korp’s second attack against Tobruk failed in 1941. RAF fatalities remembered today include Alex McVeigh from Portavogie who died in Nigeria in 1940, James Flynn from Armagh and QUB who died over the Netherlands in 1941, and James Buchanan ex QUB who died training in Arizona, USA, in 1943. Veterans today reflect men who served in the Royal Navy in WW1. Edwin Palmer from Newcastle served from 1903 to 1924. He re-engaged this day in 1915, when he could have returned to civilian life.
