Charles Trainer, a Londonderry sailer who survived the sinking of HMS Hawke, died in the sinking this day in 1915 of HMS Crescent. The remains of this well-known sportsman were returned to his native city where full military honours were paid at a funeral conducted by Reverend L. Hegarty, C.C., St Eugene’s. The names of 15 members of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from throughout NI who died on this day in 1942 are carried on the Rangoon Memorial, Burmah (photo). The Rangoon Memorial bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma (now Myanmar) and who have no known grave. Two further deaths occurred on this day in Burmah in 1944. Alex Bradley from Tobermore and David Glover from Dundonald were serving in the Royal Armoured Corps, 45th Regt. Reconnaissance Corps. Today’s veteran David Maffett, an RAF Wireless Operator and Air Gunner from Downpatrick, was a German POW freed on this day in 1945 by Russian forces after being force-marched by the Germans due to advancing Russian forces.
