
Richard Pim a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve officer from NI was in charge of Churchill’s Map Room during WW2 and in attendance at most of the key Allied leaders’ meetings. Sister Margaret Mayne from Ballinamallard was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal. She died in service in 1917. James Agnew, a former pupil of Belfast High School received a Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943. A failed inlet valve in the port engine caused the crash in which he died in 1944. RAF personnel were present at his funeral to Dundonald Cemetery. Today’s Veteran Eddy Martin had family in Portrush and Portstewart. Eddy emigrated to Australia where he managed to join the army on two occasions serving in Egypt and France in his first spell in WW1. He is commemorated on Portstewart’s War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in Agherton Parish Church.
