On this day in 1915 Germany used mass poison gas attacks affecting Canadian and Irish Divisions. Five NI men were lost in HMS Diamond in 1941 including Albert French from Randalstown. Two weeks earlier his brother Herbert was a survivor of HMS Rajputana. The Roll for 1943 includes six names and reflects the cost to infantry of N Africa battles – Inniskilling Fusiliers, Irish and Grenadier Guards – from Coagh, Newcastle, Brookeborough, Moneymore, Hillsborough and Portaferry. In 1945 Thomas Murray from Bangor and William Sims from Sydenham were lost in HMS Redmill which was torpedoed 25 miles west of Mayo. The Veteran remembered today on the anniversary of his death in 1978 is Sydney Allison, an outstanding Belfast naval surgeon who served in both wars, and authored the history of HMS Caroline.
