Two entries in today’s Roll remember NI men who served with Canadian forces in WW1. James Stewart from Lisburn was serving with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). He died this day in 1915, and in 1917 James Kane from Magherafelt died serving with the 4th Btn Canadian Infantry. Today’s WW1 veterans are Henry Chambers from Bushmills who served in Russia with the Naval Armoured Car Division before being commissioned in the Royal Engineers, and Samuel McCluskey a founder member of the Portstewart Branch of the Royal British Legion. In WW2 Patrick Brown from Londonderry serving in Australian Infantry fell in Egypt and is named on the Alamein Memorial. The “D Day dodgers” of the The London Irish Rifles in the Irish Brigade who had a tough campaign in Italy held a victory celebration when they heard that Field Marshal Montgomery had reported to the supreme allied command that all enemy forces in Holland, Northwest Germany and Denmark, had surrendered. Remember today the loss of HMS Sheffield in the Falklands War.
