May 14. U boats surrender at Derry. Quigg VC anniversary. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1945 the surrender of German U-boats began on the Foyle. News report of two local regiments in WW1, marching to Magilligan from Ballymoney, stopping at the Diamond, Coleraine. In 1915 William Stanfield, a Marine from Belfast, died in Gibraltar on the hospital ship bringing him home from Egypt. His remains rest in North Front cemetery. Robert Lorimer was born in South Africa and after his father’s death there was educated at Rockport and Campbell College. He joined the RAF in 1936. He was flying a Hawker Hurricane Mark 1 aircraft (L1676) on a patrol mission when he was shot down in combat over France in 1940. Entries for another three RUR Riflemen reflect the fought withdrawal to Dunkirk in 1940. Today’s Veteran – This is the anniversary of the passing of Sgt. Robert Quigg VC.
