15th May. WW1 charity football match. WW2 PoW’s six month march. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1915 a combined Linfield and Belfast Celtic football team played a Rest of Belfast team to raise funds for wounded soldiers. This period in both world wars is marked by major battles in which the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers took part – In 1915 The Battle of Festubert and in 1944 the Battles around Cassino. In 1940 Hugh White was taken prisoner on this day at Dunkirk and started a six month forced march to Poland. Two Coleraine men are remembered in today’s Veterans’ Roll – John Caldwell served in R Navy in WW1, and Dr Edwin Torrie, the eldest son of Rev. E.G. Torrie, former minister of Terrace Row, Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, was a naval surgeon in WW2. Edwin was later the chairman of the Burma Star and the RN Associations plus the RNLI.
