Newry-born Francis Joseph McMahon recounts life with the NIH in WW1 and his journey to Egypt with their horses when the regiment was dismounted in 1917. The tank above stands in Carrickfergus as a memorial to the regiment and particularly in the liberation of Italy in WW2. The red and white flash denotes a Canadian war honour for its support of their forces attacking the Hitler Line. Medical officer James Annesley from Fermanagh, an old boy of Armagh Royal, died in an air crash in WW1, examining the effects of nervousness on RFC crew. James McConnell was born in Sydney, Australia, raised in Ballymena, and attended Ballymena Academy. He fell with Australian infantry near Anzac Cove in 1915. Three Royal Irish Fusiliers died in 1940 acting as part of the rear guard before the withdrawal to Dunkirk. Joseph Burns from Cookstown, William Gillespie from Belfast, and James McCrory of Gortin are remembered in Belgian cemeteries.
