May 23. Bob Wright – from Sandy Row to Dunkirk and Burma. Roll of Honour

The Roll of Honour for WW2 highlights two major developments. Entries for 1940 reflect the defensive fall back to Dunkirk with the fallen named on the Dunkirk Memorial or in cemeteries along the route. One of them was Gunner Leonard Edgar of 8th (Belfast) HAA Regt. In 1944 nine men mainly from North Antrim and Armagh, serving in the North Irish Horse died on this day near Cassino in Italy. In all 36 men died in the bloodiest day in the history of the NIH. On the same date Bob McClure from Dundonald was over Germany when his Lancaster Bomber exploded. He was blown through the canopy. He was found dead on the ground with an unopened parachute.
