December 8. Battle of the Falkland Islands 1914. Roll of Honour

Today in 1914 a Royal Navy squadron defeated a German force off the Falkland Islands. Charles Stuart from Ballymena was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in connection with the sinking of the German Cruiser Dresden in a follow-up action. William Kilpatrick emigrated from Moy to S Africa. Named on Moy War Memorial he died serving in South African Infantry on Somme in 1917.In 1941 US Congress declares war and the first chemical gassing of victims begins in occupied Poland, near Lodz. RAF personnel: Daniel MacAleese from Scarva was shot down near Hamburg in 1942, and Charles Routledge from Killen died in Italy in 1945.
