December 26. Yachtsman from RNIYC and HMS Caroline lost. Roll of Honour

Walter Edmenson, a Naval Reserve officer from HMS Caroline, who was a member of Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, and a well known Belfast shipping company, was lost when his craft hit a mine on Boxing Day 1940. In 1943 Royal Navy ships sank the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in the Battle of North Cape off Norway. HMS Duke of York took part. Today we remember men from NI who served in York. They are from Killyleagh, Dungannon, Londonderry and Belfast. Photo – Tyne Cot Cemetery is located 9 Kms north-east of Ypres and contains 11,968 WW1 burials. The Memorial commemorates those whose who died in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 and whose graves are not known.Total 35,001.
