
Thomas McLaughlin from Coleraine had served served 6 years in RNVR. He re-enlisted on 17/09/1914 and served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Naval Brigade which was basically a formation of sailors serving in an infantry role. He was killed in action, at Achi Baba, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, on this day in 1915. He is named on the Helles Memorial, Turkey and on Coleraine WM. William McVeigh from Cookstown was serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was wounded three times in France before being re-deployed. He died in 1917 and his remains rest in Jerusalem War Cemetery. Two crew members of HM Tug St Issey, Alex Brady from Belfast and Samuel Morton from Bushmills, died 28/12/1942 off Bengazi. On the same day three members of the Royal Irish Fusiliers. 1st Btn. fell during the Faughs’ operations around Goubellat in Tunisia. John Rainey from Omagh serving with the Royal Corps of Signals died near Antwerp in 1944. Veterans today include Cecil “Bunny” Austin, WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot from Londonderry and father of local radio personality Wendy Austin; and Robert Barr from Coleraine, a Royal Marine gunner who took part in the Battle of Jutland in WW1.
