January 19. Italy Battle Honour for Inniskillings. First loss of 502 Sqdn. Roll of Honour

Today’s Roll includes accounts of former Inst student Ralph Ireland a young RN officer lost in heavy seas in 1917 and William Darragh from Cookstown who died in HMS Grenville in 1940. Harry Christie, DSO, MC died in Italy in 1944. A teacher in Strandtown Primary school, he is thought to be the ‘most decorated Inniskilling.’ There are six RAF personnel in today’s Roll. Photo – Ovillers Military Cemetery: On 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the 8th Division attacked Ovillers and the 34th Division La Boisselle.
