April 27. Poisoned gas at Ypres. HMS Caroline historian and recorder. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1915 Germany used mass poison gas attacks affecting Canadian and Irish Divisions. Five NI men were lost in HMS Diamond in 1941 including Albert French from Randalstown. Two weeks earlier his brother Herbert was a survivor of HMS Rajputana. The Roll for 1943 includes five names and reflects the cost to infantry of N Africa battles. The Veteran remembered today on the anniversary of his death in 1978 is Sydney Allison, an outstanding Belfast naval surgeon who served in both wars, and authored the history of HMS Caroline.
