May 5. German U-boat shells Portballintrae. Roll of Honour

In 1918, a German submarine U-boat (U9) surfaced off Portballintrae and shelled the village attempting to hit SS Wheatear, an armed coaster. Captain John Adams the only son of the Archdeacon of Derry, died in 1915 at Hill 60, south east of Ypres, near Zillebeke in Belgium. John Sharkey died at Gallipoli serving with the Australian army. An adult emigrant from Belfast he was described as one of Ireland’s greatest Gaelic footballers. Today in 1943 the Gurkhas were awarded the Tunis Battle Honour. Today’s Roll includes local Gunners, John Brown and Henry Corry, killed in an air raid on the Twin Islands in Belfast in 1941. RAF war graves in the Netherlands, the Reichswald Forest and southern Germany and infantry deaths in Italy and Pakistan testify to the global challenges in WW2.
