
The sinking of HMS Goliath off Cape Helles in 1915 dominates today’s Roll. 570 of the 750 men were lost including 23 from NI. Boy First Class Alfred Henry Gadd and Stoker First Class Hector Hiles, had Newtownards links. Hubert Heal from Portrush was lost in HM Submarine Undaunted between Lybia and Malta in 1941. In 1944 Christopher Saunderson from Ballymena died while taking part in a mission to attack railway marshalling yards at Hasselt, Belgium with RAF 76 Squadron. Do not miss the account of veteran Basil Aldwell in today’s Roll of Honour. The son of the rector of St George’s, Belfast, he survived an extensive and cruel regime as a Japanese PoW. He enlisted in1920 and was an experienced naval aviator. On 21/06/1944 he was shot down on bombing raid on Port Blair, Andaman Islands. It was not until 1950 that Basil was fit enough to work. A radio ham, his first post was fixing the police radar in Northern Ireland. He died on 13/05/1996 aged 76 at his home in Guernsey. For today’s report click on file at –
