
Squadron Leader Tom Long flew Mosquitos with the Pathfinder Force in WW2 and attacked Berlin on 25 occasions resulting in the award of a DFC and bar. In the last six weeks of the war he made 14 attacks against Berlin including the last RAF raid on the night of April 20. It was his 55th and final operation in the Mosquito and his 87th bombing operation of the war. Five died this day at Gallipoli in 1915, three were Inniskillings – Henry Black from Derry, Hugh McBride from Coleraine, and James Espey from Cookstown. Eight RAF men named on today’s Roll died over Burma, France and Italy. Fred Mathews from Lurgan died near El Alamein serving with New Zealand forces. One of today’s Veterans, George McFadden, was a Royal Navy Medic who was washed overboard in WW1, survived and served in army in WW2.
