July 9. HMS Vanguard sunk by accidental explosions at Scapa Floe. Roll of Honour

16 men from Northern Ireland were among the 845 who died in HMS Vanguard in 1917. John Adams and C Thompson were from Coleraine. Charles Thompson from Gracehill, Ballymena also perished. A brother, Rifleman Scott Thompson, 12th Royal Irish Rifles, was killed in action 16/08/1917 in the third Ypres offensive. In 1916 Thomas Barr a former North Irish Horse trooper from the Maze, Lisburn, died with the Fort Garry Horse, a Canadian cavalry regiment. 38 (Irish) Brigade took part in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily which begins this day in 1943. In 1944 Robert Hoey from Carnalea died with the RUR in Normandy on the day his twin sons were born. The 9th July marks the anniversary of the death of Brigadier-General Ambrose Richardo CBE, DSO, the first person to be appointed Chief Commissioner for Scouting in Ireland. Ricardo who lived at Zion Mills was a very significant figure in Ulster during the first quarter of the 20th century, both as a soldier and a civilian. For today’s full report click here –
