August 6. HMS Amphion the first RN loss of the first war. Roll of Honour

Today is the anniversary of the first RN ship lost in WW1 and the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan in WW2. Ethel McConachy’s brother Charles was one of the four NI men who was lost in HMS Amphion. Ethel joined the Malayan Nursing Service. She died in WW2 when SS Tanjong Pinang was sunk by a Japanese submarine in February 1942. In today’s Roll, there is a graphic eye witness account of Gallipoli by Basil Cowan from Dunmurry. Robert Lynn of Coalisland was one of four brothers to die in WW1 in Belgium, France and Israel. ‘Big Bill’ Irwin was an Old Portoran who served in North Africa with the Derry Gunners. Captain Irwin is remembered at Imphal War Cemetery, India; Derry Cathedral WM to 9th (Londonderry) HAA Regiment, Royal Artillery, and Portora RS WM. For today’s full report download here –
