The 16th Irish Division rose to prominence on 3 September 1916 with battles in Guillemont and Ginchy. The Division contained many men from the north of Ireland. 36 men are recorded in today’s Roll of Honour who died in this day in 1916. Fourteen of them are from Londonderry including John Lenox-Conyngham, a descendant of a siege family. County Monaghan man Thomas Hughes of The Connaught Rangers won the VC. Banbridge men Hugh Graham and James Sneddon fell with the Black Watch. See James’ record in today’s Roll for an account of a most memorable action which involved a Royal Engineer Tunnelling Company. Reginald Bateman was a former student at Portora who became Professor of English at the University of Saskatoon. He fell this day in 1918, a captain in Canadian Infantry. He is remembered at the Vimy Memorial.
