September 21. Canadian Hill 70 VC winner from Kilkeel. Roll of Honour

On this day in 1917, Robert Hanna from Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, serving in the Canadian Army, was recommended for the award of the Victoria Cross. The Battle of Hill 70 Memorial Park (Photo in today’s report) was completed in October, 2019. The centrepiece of the Memorial Park is an obelisk signifying the victory of the Canadian Corps at the Battle of Hill 70 in 1917. Six VC’s were awarded to Canadians at Hill 70. Men from NI served with Canadian forces in both World Wars. One from each war is remembered in today’s Roll. James Carmichael, an infanteer from Larne, is named on the Vimy Memorial. John Creighton, a Royal Canadian Air Force Flight Sergeant was from Kilwaughter, County Antrim. His remains rest in Coburg, Ontario. Belfast man, John Hamilton of the Parachute Regiment, and RAFVR Flight Sergeant Robert Percy from Ballymena died this day in 1944 at Arnhem. In WW1 William Browne of the Inniskillings was attached to the Royal Flying Corps. He died over France, and George Bittles of Coleraine who had served in India died in his home town.
